The First World War was known as ‘The Great War’ until the start of the Second World War. More than nine million combatants were killed. Over 700,000 died from the United Kingdom, with more than one and a half million wounded.
The following pages give the key events for each year of the war, with information relating to our local community. These will be added to over the coming years as the centenary is commemorated.
